Virgilio Elizondo

Distinguished international figure in Catholic theology, and the leading thinker in U.S. Latino theology and ministry, Virgilio Elizondo, was honored as the recipient of the 19th Jerome Award during CLA's Opening Awards Dinner on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 in Minneapolis. Selected by CLA’s Academic Libraries Section, the Award recognized Father Elizondo's outstanding contribution and commitment to excellence in scholarship which embody the ideals of the Catholic Library Association.
Ordained in 1963, Virgilio Elizondo’s theology and pastoral ministry are rooted in his creative re-examination of two foundational faith sources: the image and narrative of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Jesus stories of the Gospel. In these sources he finds rich treasures for theological reflection on the life and mission of the mestizo people, more specifically the Mexican-Americans of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.
