The Children’s Library Services Section of the Catholic Library Association is proud to announce that Ashley Bryan has been awarded the 2011 Regina Medal. He will receive the award on April 27, 2011, at the Catholic Library Association Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Born in 1923, Bryan grew up in the Bronx as one of six children. He is a graduate of Cooper Union Art School and Columbia University. His long career in teaching art culminated with his retirement as Professor Emeritus at Dartmouth College in the 1980s. When he is at home, on Little Cranberry Island off the coast of Maine, he paints, writes, and makes puppets and stained glass panels from objects found on the beach. The rest of his time is spent traveling around the world, giving puppet shows, poetry and storytelling presentations, and building schools and libraries in Africa.
Members of the Regina Medal Committee include the current, elected members of the CLS Section Board and five additional appointees from various geographic regions of the country.
