Aggiornamento Award - Recipient for 2009

deckAggiornamento Award Presented to Fr. Allan Deck

The Parish and Community Library Services Section of the Catholic Library Association honored Rev. Allan Figueroa Deck, S.J., Director of the Office for Cultural Diversity in the Church, USCCB, with the annual Aggiornamento Award. Fr. Deck received the awawrd at the Opening Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Orange County Hotel in Anaheim, California on Tuesday evening, April 14. The Aggiornamento Award has been presented annually since 1980 by the Parish and Community Library Services Section to honor an individual or organization who has made an outstanding contribution to the goals of the Section and to the growth and renewal of parish and community librarianship in the spirit of Blessed John XXIII.

Father Deck, formerly President/Executive Director of the Loyola Institute for Spirituality in Orange, California, and superior of the Jesuit Community of Orange, Calif., holds numerous degrees, including: a Ph.D. in Spanish and Latin American Studies from St. Louis University, Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, a Diploma in Pastoral Ministry from the Brazilian Development Institute, a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology, both from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He founded the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians, was first President of the National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry, consultant to the U.S. Bishops’ Committee of Hispanic Affairs and served on the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities.

His career encompasses teaching at Loyola Marymount and Barry Universities, and the Jesuit School of Theology. His writings include The Second Wave: Hispanic Ministry and the Evangelization of Cultures and, with Jay P. Dolan, Hispanic Catholic Culture in the United States: Issues and Concerns.
