Seton Hall Cancels Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians in Catholic Institutions
Seton Hall University has canceled its Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians in Catholic Institutions scheduled for June, 2010. The Leaderships Institute, the first CLA/Seton Hall co-sponsored event of its kind, was designed for college and university librarians, especially those working in Catholic and faith-based institutions.
Seton Hall hopes to reschedule The Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians in Catholic Institutions in early 2011.
Catholic Library World Welcomes New Editor
Catholic Library Association has named Sigrid Kelsey the new general editor of the association's quarterly journal, Catholic Library World, effective immediately. She will succeed longtime editor, Mary E. Gallagher, SSJ, of Elms College, Chicopee, Massachusetts, who in 2009, announced her pending retirement after fifteen years of service to the publication.
Ms. Kelsey graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and received her MLIS from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a full librarian at the Louisiana State University Libraries in Baton Rouge and serves as the Electronic Reference Services and Web Development Coordinator, and also as a Religious Studies Subject Specialist. Ms. Kelsey is active in the Louisiana Library Association (LLA) and is the editor of their Web site. In addition, she has edited and/or published over thirty professional articles and several books, including Handbook of Research on Computer Mediated Communication (IGI Global, 2008) and Outreach Services in Academic and Special Libraries (Haworth Press, 2004).
Catholic Library World (ISSN 0008-820X) is the official publication of the Catholic Library Association. It is indexed in nine library and information sciences indices. CLW, a quarterly journal (September, December, March, and June) publishes articles and book reviews of interest to libraries and librarians in all segments of the community, including academic, seminary, archives, parish, community, high school, middle school, children's and public. News related to the association and its activities is included in each issue. All major articles are juried. CLA offers a range of continuing education programs, including archives workshops for religious communities; produces various reference tools for librarians; provides scholarships and grants for persons in library service; sponsors CLA Reads; and a host of related offerings.

Call for 2011 Convention Proposals
Catholic Library Association invites the submission of quality proposals for presentation at the 2011 Annual Conference, April 26-28, 2011, in New Orleans, LA. CLA meets in conjunction with National Catholic Educational Association during Easter Week each year. Those attending CLA are librarians serving patrons of all ages primarily in K-12, academic, parish and public libraries. In addition to general topics for these groups, additional sessions focus on archives and preservation of American Catholic materials. The convention theme is New Orleans 2011:Leadership, Direction, Service.
Include a description of the topic or title of the program, name of presenter(s) with complete contact information, brief description of the proposed program, audience level and references for prior presentations, if available. Proposals should be submitted before June 1, 2010 by mail, fax or e-mail to:

The editors and staff of Catholic Library World currently have openings for volunteer reviewers of books and media. CLW considers for review all genres except adult fiction. Openings exist in all areas, especially in children’s books (fiction and non-fiction), spirituality and Biblical commentary. Reviewing format and guidelines are provided to reviewers. This workbook is intended to assist the reader with developing policies and forms as well as offering resources for collection development in any Catholic library. Inlcuded in the workbook are sample policies and forms and a bibliography of resources.
CLA to Investigate Virtual Chapter Feasibility
Jonathan Hinck, Serials & Archives Librarian at Viterbo University and the Wisconsin Chapter Web Page Administrator, has agreed to chair a committee to investigate the feasibility of creating an online virtual chapter or chapters of CLA. If you or someone you know has some experience with creating web pages, distance instruction, etc., and you are interested in being a part of this new venture, please contact Jonathan at jhhinck@viterbo.edu. The committee will be studying the possibility of virtual chapters, so feel free to offer or share your opinions, knowledge, or expertise.
Aggiornamento Award Presented to Fr. Allan Deck
The Parish and Community Library Services Section of the Catholic Library Association honored Rev. Allan Figueroa Deck, S.J., Director of the Office for Cultural Diversity in the Church, USCCB, with the annual Aggiornamento Award. Fr. Deck received the awawrd at the Opening Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Orange County Hotel in Anaheim, California on Tuesday evening, April 14. The Aggiornamento Award has been presented annually since 1980 by the Parish and Community Library Services Section to honor an individual or organization who has made an outstanding contribution to the goals of the Section and to the growth and renewal of parish and community librarianship in the spirit of Blessed John XXIII.
Father Deck, formerly President/Executive Director of the Loyola Institute for Spirituality in Orange, California, and superior of the Jesuit Community of Orange, Calif., holds numerous degrees, including: a Ph.D. in Spanish and Latin American Studies from St. Louis University, Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, a Diploma in Pastoral Ministry from the Brazilian Development Institute, a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology, both from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He founded the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians, was first President of the National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry, consultant to the U.S. Bishops� Committee of Hispanic Affairs and served on the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities.
His career encompasses teaching at Loyola Marymount and Barry Universities, and the Jesuit School of Theology. His writings include The Second Wave: Hispanic Ministry and the Evangelization of Cultures and, with Jay P. Dolan, Hispanic Catholic Culture in the United States: Issues and Concerns.
Lois Duncan Receives 2009 St. Katharine Drexel Award
Lois Duncan, famed author of young adult favorites Stranger with My Face, Summer of Fear, Killing Mr. Griffin and Don't Look Behind You and many others was presented with the 2009 St. Katharine Drexel Award in recognition for her outstanding contribution to the growth of high school librarianship.
The award ceremony took place at the Opening Awards Dinner during CLA's annual conference at on Tuesday, April 14 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County Hotel.

5th Annual CLA Collaborative Quilt Raffle
Several members of CLA accepted the challenge and made a quilt block with fabric provided at last year's convention. The quilt raffle took place at the annual convention in Minneapolis on April 8, 2010. Lyn Busche from St. Jude School in Cincinnati was this year's quilt raffle winner. Proceeds from the quilt raffles go to the Catholic Library Association Scholarship Fund. A 6th Annual CLA Collaborative Quilt is planned. Watch this website for further details.
Lois Ehlert Honored with 2009 Regina Medal
Lois Ehlert was presented with the Catholic Library Association’s 51st Regina Medal at the 2009 CLA Convention in Anaheim, CA during the Regina Medal Luncheon on Wednesday, April 15 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County in recognition of her lifetime contribution to excellence in literature for children. She has received several awards for her art and for her children’s books, including a Caldecott Honor Book Award for Color Zoo. “Conversations with Lois Ehlert” and a book signing session took place after the luncheon.
Peter C. Phan Honored as 2009 Jerome Award Recipient
Peter C. Phan was presented with the Catholic Library Association�s 18th Jerome Award at CLA’s Opening Awards Dinner on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County Hotel. The award is in recognition of his outstanding contribution and commitment to excellence in scholarship which embody the ideals of the Catholic Library Association. Father Phan, coming from Vietnam to the U.S. as a refugee in 1975, is currently the Ignacio Ellacuria Chair of Catholic Social Thought at Georgetown University. He has earned three doctorates and has authored a dozen books and 300 essays on various themes of theology. He is the first non-Anglo to be elected President of the Catholic Theological Society of America.
The John Brubaker Memorial Award is Presented to Margaret M. McGuiness
Margaret M. McGuiness has been named this year's John Brubaker Memorial Award recipient for her article "American Catholic Studies: The Field and the Journal," which appeared in the September 2007 issue of Catholic Library World, Vol 78, No.1. The article was judged to be precise, free of ambiguity, economical in expression, original and stimulating, and considerate of the reading audience.
Catholic Library Association Publishes New Catholic Supplement to A Handbook for Church Librarians
Church librarians in Catholic parishes now have a new tool to make their collections more organized and accessible to patrons: the Catholic Supplement to A Handbook for Church Librarians published by the Catholic Library Association (CLA). The second revised edition of the Handbook for Church Librarians was published in 2006 by the National Church Library Association and is geared toward the novice parish librarian. The new CLA Supplement adds specifically Catholic elements and resources that a Catholic parish library will need. It includes three chapters on the basics of setting up and maintaining a parish library, as well as appendixes with Catholic subject headings, lists of reference materials, and websites for Catholics.
The Supplement was developed and written by a committee of the Parish and Community Library Services Section of the Catholic Library Association. The Supplement is available bundled with the Handbook for $35.00 plus shipping.

John T. Corrigan, CFX Memorial Continuing Education Grant
The John T. Corrigan, CFX Memorial Continuing Education Grant was re-established by the CLA Executive Board in March 2008 to assist sections and regional chapters of the Catholic Library Association in their mission to provide quality continuing education opportunities to their members. CLA Reads
In November 2008, the Catholic Library Association will launch CLA Reads, a service to the Catholic and wider communities to present pertinent background materials and guides to planning or directing book discussion groups for churches, schools, organizations, or friends. The service will provide materials to assist in beginning and conducting an effective discussion program all available through the CLA website.
