The Children’s Library Services Section of Catholic Library Association is pleased to announce that noted author and illustrator, Kevin Henkes was named the 2013 Regina Medal Award Winner.  Inspired by such illustrators as Crockett Johnson and Garth Williams, Henkes decided at an early age that he would be an artist, and enjoyed frequent visits to the nearby art museum. It was a high school teacher’s encouragement of his writing, however, that gave Henkes the idea for his future career.  Mr. Henkes will receive the Regina Medal Award at our 92nd NCEA/CLA Convention to be held in Houston, April 2013.  Please plan to join us for this special event.

The Children’s section actively participates and shows scholarly interest in the activities of the Catholic Library Association relating to children’s libraries, both school and public. It promotes communication and mutual support among children’s librarians and the enhancement of library service to children through education, cooperation, and the exchange of ideas.  Its benefits include:

-       Listserv open to members and nonmembers of the Catholic Library Association who share an interest in children’s literature and children’s library service

-       Regina Medal awarded annually to recognize the body of work of a living individual or couple whose contributions to the field of children’s literature exemplify the idea that, in the words of Walter de la Mare, “Only the rarest kind of best can be good enough for the young.”

-      Convention programs pertaining to children’s literature and library services

-       Access to many articles and reviews of children’s books in Catholic Library World

-        Opportunities at convention to obtained signed copies of Regina Medal recipient’s books
