Catholic Library Association Publishes New Catholic Supplement to A Handbook for Church Librarians

Church librarians in Catholic parishes now have a new tool to make their collections more organized and accessible to patrons: the Catholic Supplement to A Handbook for Church Librarians published by the Catholic Library Association (CLA). The second revised edition of the Handbook for Church Librarians was published in 2006 by the National Church Library Association and is geared toward the novice parish librarian. The new CLA Supplement adds specifically Catholic elements and resources that a Catholic parish library will need. It includes three chapters on the basics of setting up and maintaining a parish library, as well as appendixes with Catholic subject headings, lists of reference materials, and websites for Catholics. The Supplement was developed and written by a committee of the Parish and Community Library Services Section of the Catholic Library Association.

The Supplement will be sold bundled with the Handbook and will be available at a special reduced rate of $30.00 plus shipping until March 31, 2008, after which the price will be $35.00 plus shipping.

Members of CLA's Parish and Community Libraries Section will be offered a $2.00 discount off either price. Handbooks will be available at the Convention. Purchasers by mail have a choice of shipping by Library or Media Mail for $2.50, or First Class for $5.00. Click here to download and print a Handbook order form. More information is available by calling 413-443-2252. Pre-paid orders should be sent to: Parish Library Handbook, Catholic Library Association, 100 North St., Ste. 224, Pittsfield, MA 01201-5109.

Northern Illinois Chapter Reorganization Meeting, University of St Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, IL Saturday, September 6, 2008

Yes! The call for Catholic Librarians of Illinois and NW Indiana is here! We hope that CLA members whether on the national or local level can attend this important meeting to reinvigorate our regional chapter. Ms. Lorraine Olley, library director of the University of St Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary has graciously offered to host the meeting in the renovated Feehan Memorial Library (1929) and newly added McEssy Theological Resource Center (2004). The original building interior was designed after the library of the Barberini Palace in Italy. For those who have never seen the Mundelein Seminary (www.usml.edu) it is well worth the drive as the seminary is situated on nearly 1,000 acres. Due to the presence of the Catholic Library Association Executive Board meeting in Chicago, many CLA officials will be in attendance, President Cathy Fennell, Sr. Jean Bostley, Executive Director and Annette Thibodeaux, coordinator of CLA sections and chapters. If you are a librarian in Illinois or NW Indiana join us for this important meeting as we shape CLA's future goals and plans. Details will follow. If you would like add your name to the invitation list, contact CLA, and include your address and e-mail.
