Job Opening for Librarian, Villanova University
In light of the evolving trends colleges and universities are facing, the new University Librarian will need to envision the future of the library. Furthermore, as Villanova seeks to be ranked as a national doctoral institution, the University Librarian will need to possess the perspective to strengthen Falvey’s resources to meet the needs of students and faculty.
Falvey recently received national recognition winning the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Award for Excellence 2013. The Library sits in the middle of Villanova’s campus and serves as a hub of activity. Falvey supports research and scholarly activities for faculty and students. The collections include 1.68 million items with 551,236 stack items, 35,297 electronic journals, and 3,596 print journals. For Fiscal Year 2013, there were 463,819 physical visits, 495,916 virtual visits, and two million web page views. There were over 4,000 research and information desk questions, and the library has 80 available computers to use. Villanova has a robust digital footprint. The Digital library initiative assembles, presents, and preserves digital collections that support the teaching and research of the campus and the global community of scholars. The operating budget for Falvey is $7.9 million. The library staff of 50 which includes four full-time software development programmers is passionate, collaborative and collegial. The University Librarian reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The University Librarian will need to be a leader of vision and drive, with the imagination to define the Library’s evolving role as a learning environment with virtual methods of interaction and infrastructure support, and the discipline to maintain its fiscal responsibility. An ALA accredited MLS degree or Master’s degree equivalent is required. A Ph.D. is preferred. Other qualifications include: essential academic library management skills, including knowledge of the acquisitions and licensing of electronic resources, management and development of physical space, contemporary library operations and services, collections management, and the development of consortial relationships.
